Virus E-mailMany CCYC members have expressed concern about receiving "virus" type e-mail from other members or officers of CCYC. Currently, the two most prevalent e-mail viruses that exist in cyberspace are the "Klez" and "Yaha" viruses. Both of these viruses have the ability to spoof the from address of the sender (i.e., the message is NOT really from who it says it is). Basically the viruses work through a list of e-mail addresses obtained from a user's address book or a webpage (like CCYC's roster & officer pages). The virus sends an e-mail to the first user, but says it's from the second user in the list as it continues through the entire list. We suspect that at least a few CCYC members probably have these viruses in addition to anyone else on the Internet who has the virus AND browses our CCYC website. Are you "infected" with a Virus? The best way to prevent the spread and continuation of computer viruses is to have some form of antivirus protection. Chances are that if you're not running some form of AV software or scanning service on your machine, that you may likely have a virus. Viruses can cause many harmful side effects (deleted files, system crashes, etc.). However, they can also be relatively benign, but continue to propagate through e-mail, which infects, annoys and may harm other computers of friends and family whose e-mail addresses exist in your address book or web pages that you browse. How Do I Check My Machine? The quickest and easiest method to check your machine for viruses is to use a free scanning service. Although these services are free, their goal is to sell you a product or service that will continue to keep your machine virus free. If you already have antivirus software, it is very important that you keep it updated with the latest AV updates (dozens of new viruses are discovered each month). Your AV software should instruct you how to download the latest virus updates. Antivirus Products & ServicesBelow two of the most popular antivirus companies and their AV products/services. Use their free scanning service to check your machine for any possible viruses.
